IMPORTANT NOTE FROM ACULABS’ COMPLIANCE OFFICER

Since Medicare-reimbursed test procedures are being constantly reviewed and audited

we would like to remind you of important limits and restrictions that must be adhered to:

1.When requesting Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC):

Because TIBC is a test that is calculated from the results of two other analyzed tests: Iron and Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC), it cannot be ordered or performed alone. It must be ordered as an Iron Profile (test 1260). The Iron Profile includes Iron, UIBC, TIBC and Transferrin Saturation %.

2.When requesting Fecal Occult Blood testing (FOBT) Test Code 417I or Clostridium Difficile testing (C. Diff.) Test Code 880:

When submitting 2 or 3 stool specimens for either of these tests, each specimen must have a different date of collection on the container. DO NOT submit 3 specimens labeled with the same collection date. Only one specimen per day may be analyzed.

3.When you are requesting a test from the manual test request form:

Do not circle the test name on the form. Place an “x” or a “√” in the box to the left of the test name to indicate what testing is required. Use the “SPECIAL TEST INSTRUCTIONS” area to request a test that is not listed on the test request form. Since we are bound by CLIA and Medicare regulations to perform only testing as requested by the physician that is supported by medical necessity, remember to include patient diagnosis as well.

4.When Collecting Urine for Culture:

Urine cultures need to be initiated in a timely manner. The collection and storage method will determine how long the specimen can be kept before coming to the lab. When you submit a prepared Dip N Count (paddle), the culture process is initiated as soon as the paddle is dipped in the urine specimen. There is a 72 hour window of viability for these specimens. Urines for C & S simply submitted in a sterile container and refrigerated may only be stored for 24 hours. It is important that you use the Dip N Count whenever possible especially if a urine is to be collected Friday through Sunday or on a day that is not your regular lab day. All urinalysis specimens are acceptable up to 72 hours.
